Team Fortress 2 underwent several stages of development that drastically changed its gameplay and setting before it was officially released.
(1997) TF Software's Version
Team Fortress 2 was originally being developed by TF Software. Little is known about this era.
(1998) Valve's Team Fortress
After Valve acquired TF Software, a new version of Team Fortress 2 titled Valve's Team Fortress started development. The game featured a realistic modern military theme that remained in subsequent prototypes for a short period.
