Through the 24 year existence of Team Fortress, the Soldier has prevailed as one of the most popular classes, along with Sniper, the Demolitons Man & the Heavy Weapons Guy. Let's take a look at the evolution of his design.
Version 1: QuakeWorld Team Fortress
In QuakeWorld Team Fortress, the Soldier appears to wear a chestplate over a camoflagued jumpsuit. He wears a helmet with glasses and carries the Rocket Launcher in thirdperson.
Version 2: Team Fortress Classic Beta
This variant of the TFC Soldier was only seen in a few screenshots before release, however, it more resembled the QWTF Soldier than release TFC Soldier, with the notable presence of a helmet, goggles, and a team coloured jumpsuit.
Version 3: Team Fortress Classic
The version of TFC Soldier seen in the release build up until 2001, is much different from the previous 2 versions. He scraps goggles and a helmet for some camoflague facepaint and a team coloured beret, and his jumpsuit is now monochromatic, rather than team coloured.
Version 3.5: Team Fortress Classic HD Model
When the TFC playermodels were remade in 2001, Soldier was no exception. He now wore a vest, and his team coloured jumpsuit and helmet made a return. The model also recieved a large increase in polycount and texture detail, with the animations not being spared from overhaul.
