canals_01_15 is a 2002-era map that comprises part of the early Canals chapter. The map was created by Aaron Barber, and remains within the WC Mappack in an unfinished - albeit partially playable - state.

Overview

The map is set in a small portion of the Canals area that would eventually make it's way into the final build of Half-Life 2. Collapsed portions of the buildings lining the canal present obstacles for the player, and the lack of barriers on the upper portion of the canal allows for the player to explore the ruined buildings. Gameplay-wise, the map features a few enemies; four Manhacks, a pair of Houndeyes, two Fast Headcrabs, a Turret, fifteen Barnacles, three Bullsquids, and a pair of Citizens. The Citizens appear completely black because the early renderer that existed in the Source engine in 2002 works differently than the renderer that is found in the leaked build that Axel Gembe released in 2003. The map lacks changelevel triggers, but is otherwise fairly complete. It is an easy map to fix, though it is shown here in the unfixed state that it exists as within the WC Mappack.
